2025 Science Summer Camp
College of Science, National Pingtung University hosted the “Science Summer Camp,” a ten-day international program held from July 1 to July 10, 2025. The camp welcomed 25 faculty members and students from Lipa City Colleges, Philippines, to Taiwan, where they participated in academic courses and cultural activities alongside professors and students from the College of Science. The program provided a valuable platform for international exchange and scientific exploration. By integrating scientific practice, language learning, and cultural experience, the camp offered a cross-national, interdisciplinary, and innovative summer learning journey.
The camp focused on the theme of science and included a variety of activities, such as Chinese language courses, Laboratory Practices in Plasma and Vacuum Coating Techniques, Sports Performance Analysis, Laser Fundamentals vs. Maker's Flying Objects, Photochemistry, Filming & Blocking. Participants also took part in a field trip to the Liudui Hakka Cultural Park, where they explored Taiwan’s natural sciences and multicultural heritage.
The opening ceremony featured speeches by Vice President for Administration Ying-Wei Liu and Vice Dean of International Affairs Yo Chen, along with welcoming remarks from College of Science Dean Hsungrow Chan and department chairs Tung-Shan Fu, Wen-Jen Lee, Hsu-Ming Chung, and Yaw-Feng Lin.
The camp began with a Chinese language course taught by Dr. Tzu-Pei Kuo from the Chinese Language Center. Through interactive instruction, participants learned basic daily expressions and gained insight into the richness of Chinese language and culture. Following this, Dr. Wen-Jen Lee from the Department of Applied Physics conducted a hands-on course on plasma and vacuum coating, in which students operated vacuum deposition equipment and learned about thin-film processes and plasma applications. In the sports performance analysis session led by Dr. Yo Chen from the Department of Physical Education, participants integrated theoretical knowledge with practical training using fitness equipment to explore how science contributes to athletic training and health promotion. During the cultural excursion to the Liudui Hakka Cultural Park, participants tried on traditional costumes and took part in guided activities that showcased the richness and diversity of Taiwan’s cultural landscape. In the Filming & Blocking course, taught by Dr. Deng Zong-Sheng from the Department of Science Communication, participants used GIGO to build creative structures, with an emphasis on logical reasoning and creative thinking. In the Laser Fundamentals vs. Maker's Flying Objects course, led by Dr. Shyan-Jer Lee from the Department of Applied Chemistry, participants fabricated drone components using laser cutters, assembled them, and tested their flight performance. The final course, Photochemistry, was taught by Dr. Chao-Han Cheng, who guided participants through a series of experiments combining light energy, chemical reactions, and materials science. Students observed phenomena such as fluorescence, photochromism, and solar simulation, gaining insight into how light plays a critical role in scientific research and green energy applications. This course brought the summer camp to a meaningful and inspiring conclusion.
This summer camp served not only as a platform for scientific learning, but also as a bridge for cultural exchange, fostering an open, inclusive, and collaborative international learning environment. The eight Taiwanese student mentors accompanied the participants throughout the program, providing support with translation and academic activities, while also building strong friendships with the Filipino students.
